The capital city of The Netherlands, Amsterdam is an iconic medieval city renowned for its elaborate canals, manifold cycle paths, windmills, tulips, gabled facades and artistic heritage.
In a city that has so much to offer, it’s difficult to know where to start. Why not head to the recently opened A’DAM Lookout, located on the banks of the river just across from Centraal Station. Perched almost 100m above ground, this observation deck easily provides the best view over Amsterdam with its 360° panoramic sky deck. See the historic old town, farms and villages to the north and IJsselmeer Lake in the East. It also boasts an interactive exhibition and, from August 2016, Europe’s highest swings right over the edge of the observation deck.
Other notable sights include Anne Frank house, Rijksmuseum (art and history museum), the Van Gogh museum, Vondelpark, Artis Zoo and Centraal Station. Soak up the atmosphere wandering around narrow streets and hidden courtyards in The Jordaan (one of the most famous neighbourhoods in The Netherlands, originally developed for the working classes).
Amsterdam is also known as ‘The Venice of the North’. An enjoyable afternoon can be spent wandering along Prinsengracht, the longest main canal in Amsterdam, admiring notable buildings such as the Westerkerk (Western Church; Amsterdam’s tallest church), Anne Frank house and Noordermarkt (Northern Market).
Why not hop on a hired bicycle and pedal around Amsterdam. Given its flat landscape and miles of cycle lane networks, Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world – there are over 800,000 bicycles in Amsterdam!
Amsterdam also offers a plethora of sightseeing tours, including but not exclusive to the Big Bus Tour, Old Amsterdam and Red Light District tour and private bike and boat ride tours. There are also tours customised to specific interests such as urban farming, architecture, windmills, shipyard area, Jewish Amsterdam, photography and the underground. For something a little different there are also ‘off the beaten track’ and ‘like a local’ tours.
