Paris is regarded as one of the most romantic cities in the world, with a rich and vibrant history, grand architecture, wide boulevards, a myriad of cafés and restaurants, and iconic monuments. A sightseeing tour of France’s capital is a must for first time visitors and regular travelers alike.
With its 1,665 steps, Paris’s most famous monument is the Eiffel Tower, standing 324 metres above the city. Built in 1889 and only originally intended to stand for 20 years, the tower continues to attract visitors from all over the world. Lifts are available for those who cannot face climbing the stairs to its three levels.
Montmartre, in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, was once a small village, but although now firmly within the city boundaries its cobblestone streets, small alleys, and little house remain picturesque and delightful. It is home to the Sacré-Cour Basilica, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, at the highest point in the city, commemorating two events of 1871; the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune.
For art lovers, the Louvre, home of the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and a vast array of other pieces, is an absolute must. A museum since 1793, the former royal palace houses collections from man’s dawn right through to modern times. The main entrance is the Pyramide du Louvre, a great glass pyramid completed in 1989 that quickly became another iconic symbol of Paris.
The Arc de Triomphe, standing at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to honour the Grande Armee. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is also located here.
Other notable sights include Notre Dame Cathedral, located on the Île de la Cité, the Centre Pompidou, home of the Musée National d’Art Modern, and the Catacombs, which hold the remains of over six million people.
One of the easiest ways to see all the sights is to take a Big Bus Tour, with both day and night tours of the city. The hop-on, hop-off tours allows visitors to see all the main sights and to explore areas at their leisure.
