This is on most Southern Utah bucket lists, you’ll find the local favorite one-two punch of Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons. These magnificent hikes, located in the Dry Fork area of the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument make for a killer loop you can tackle in one afternoon of adventure. Once you’re in, all you have to do is walk through a scenic paradise of red and purple rock, arches, and narrow slot canyons. From the trailhead, we will hike through Dry Fork Wash with moderate scrambling down some short cliffs. Once you’re off the cliff and into the sand dunes, you’ll hike along the creek wash until you see the mouth of Peek-a-Boo. Once you leave Peek-a-Boo, we will hike a little ways away to the entrance of Spooky Gulch. Scramble down a mellow rock face to get into the canyon. It soon tightens up, and you’ll be having a good time navigating the confines of this fun canyon.

We will learn about the formation of the amphitheaters, the plants and animals that call it home, and the rich human history of the area. Egypt 1 offers a lot packed into a short approach and exit. Those with high skill levels can downclimb the entire canyon. Others will do 3 short rappels. The narrows are quite good, and the challenges just hard enough to keep it interesting. With competent leadership, this is a great family or beginner friendly canyon. The downclimbs yield fairly easily to team work and partner catches / assists. Though this canyon can hold a bit of water at times after very heavy rains.

The Cosmic Ashtray is a geologic wonder located in Sothern Utah's Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This formation was carved through years of friction and sand.
