Things to Do in Cascais

I invite you to learn the secrets of Estoril and Cascais , the Portuguese Riviera, a coastline once filled with spies,  secret agents,  and exiled  Royalty during World War II. We ll begin at the legendary Hotel Palácio, a glamorous meeting point for diplomats, refugees, and secret agents  that inspired Ian Fleming to write his first  James Bond novel " Casino Royale"  The hotel even appeared in 1969 Bond movie,  "On her Majesty Secret Service", featuring José Diogo. Afterwards, we ll stop at the famous  Garret Pastry shop, a favorite local spot for both kings and spies, then walk along Tamariz Beach, the scenic path leading  toward Cascais.

In Cascais  history shifts from spies to kings. We ll visit the Fortaleza da Cidadela ( the Art District), once the royal summer residence of King Carlos I and Queen Amélia, who transformed Cascais into a place of art, sport, and modern life.  They introduced tennis and sailing, photography  and marine science, turning the seaside village into a hub of elegance and innovation. 

We ll stop at  the City Hall Museum to grasp Cascais rich History and also to find out more about the illustrious foreigners who stayed here during and after WWII.  As an alternative,  we can also end at   Museu do mar ( 3 €  ticket) - King Carlos I , which preserves his pioneering oceanografic work, and hear about  the  regicide 1908, the event that ended the Portuguese monarchy and changed the nation´s destiny.
