We are likely to see and hear Grey seals as they bask on the sands. You will hear stories dating back to Roman times and can begin to imagine early pilgrims making the crossing to pay their respects to St Aidan and St Cuthbert. Holy Island is a special place and the best way to approach it is across the sands - walking barefoot if you want to get the most from your experience! The walk is one-way to the island, returning to the start point in my vehicle after we have spent some free time on Holy Island.

Starting at Steel Rig we will walk the 2 1/2 miles to the Roman fort of Housesteads. This walk will enable you to see the wall, discover its milecastles and see the wild geography of the frontier. Housesteads is the most complete of Roman forts in Britain and gives you a fantastic view of Roman life on Hadrian’s wall. After visiting the fort we stop for lunch twice brewed where you will be able to enjoy fantastic local food. We will then proceed to Vindolanda. Vindolanda was a Roman supply base and has been extensively excavated providing us with in-depth information on the people who lived on the wall. As a fortress of the Kingdom of Northumbria Bamburgh was the centre of the largest Kingdom in England during the 7th and 8th century. In the middle ages, the Castle developed as an important fortress against Scottish attack - eventually developing into the impressive fortification you see today. Lindisfarne is famous for both the Lindisfarne Gospels and being one of the first locations in the United Kingdom to be attacked by the Vikings. It is called the cradle of English Christianity due to the importance of the monastery in the dark ages. Due to the tides, the tour may go to Lindisfarne at different times to enable safe crossing and return to the mainland. The Village of Bamburgh will also be included in the tour with the remains of the monastery and St. Aiden’s Church both being sights to visit.
